About Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is one of the most valued herbs of Ayurveda, traditionally used for strength, stress relief and restful sleep. The plant itself is a tough, drought loving shrub with soft grey green leaves and small orange red berries in papery husks. Its roots are harvested after 8 to 10 months and dried for use.

Botanical name

Withania somnifera

Family

Solanaceae (Nightshade family)

Origin

India and the dry subtropics, a pillar of Ayurveda

Local names

Ashwagandha, Asgandh, Indian Ginseng, Winter Cherry

Uses

  • Home grown Ayurvedic root for traditional preparations
  • Ashwagandha tea and churna after drying the root
  • A hardy, low water shrub for sunny dry corners
  • Educational herb garden centrepiece

Watering Guide

Sparingly. Every 4 to 5 days in summer, every 8 to 10 days in winter. Dry side is the safe side.

  • Water only when the soil is fully dry, this is a dryland herb
  • Overwatering causes root rot and ruins the harvestable root
  • Rain fed conditions suit it, shelter the pot from heavy monsoon
  • Deep, infrequent watering builds a stronger tap root

Soil Mix Recipe

  • Garden soil2 parts
  • Coarse sand2 parts, it loves light dry soil
  • Compost1/2 part, keep it lean

Best Practices

  • Use a deep pot (12 to 15 inches) so the tap root can develop
  • Do not fertilize heavily, lean soil gives more potent roots
  • Harvest roots at 8 to 10 months when the berries ripen
  • Consult a qualified practitioner before consuming any home preparation
